Cryptocurrency

Crypto.com and Coinbase are two widely-known crypto exchanges, and they both make the list of the best cryptocurrency exchanges in the USA. You are no doubt considering these two as your platform for buying cryptocurrency, but which is better to use? We'll dive in and check out various aspects of these two exchanges, and you can decide for yourself. From my experience, Crypto.com is the winner, with lower fees, Live Chat, and plenty of benefits that arise with staking their CRO coin, including up to 5% cashback and even Airport Lounge access.

Crypto.com vs Coinbase Fees

Let's take a look at one of the most important points of comparison - the fees charged by both of these platforms.

Deposit Fees

Crypto.com charges 0% deposit fees for fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies.

When you purchase crypto on Coinbase, you either pay at the time of purchase, or deposit fiat currency to pre-fund your account first. If you want to deposit beforehand, there are two methods for US residents:

  • ACH Transfer - zero fees
  • Wire Transfer - $10 fee

Trading Fees

Crypto.com has different fees for the desktop site (known as Crypto.com exchange) and the mobile app.

On Crypto.com exchange, the trading fees start at 0.4%, but can be reduced based on increased trading volume. You can receive additional discounts based on the amount of CRO coin you stake.

Using the Crypto.com mobile app, if you deposit fiat currency first (free of charge), there is no fee to buy crypto using your fiat. It is also free to trade one cryptocurrency for another one. Although Crypto.com does not charge an explicit percentage fee on these transactions, there is a fee that is incorporated into the spread.

On the Crypto.com mobile app, you can also purchase cryptocurrency directly using credit or debit card. There is a fee of up to 4% depending on your geographical location, but for the first 30 days that you are signed up, this fee is waived.

Coinbase's trading fee structure is slightly complex, consisting of two components. There is a 0.50% spread fee, plus an additional 'Coinbase fee' on top, which is the larger of the 'flat fee' or the 'variable fee', shown below.

Withdrawal Fees

Crypto.com has free withdrawals of fiat currency via bank transfer.

If you want to withdraw USDC via SWIFT Network, there is a $25 USD fee.

Coinbase's withdrawal fees depend on your location and payment method. The most popular fiat withdrawal methods are:

Bank Transfers (SEPA) - €0.15 fee
US Wire Transfer - $25 fee

It is important to note that Coinbase does NOT support fiat withdrawals in Singapore and Australia. Coinbase explains why in their help article.

Winner - Crypto.com

Crypto.com is the winner when it comes to comparing fees. You can purchase crypto for 0.4% on the desktop site, or free of charge on the app. Using Coinbase, the fees are not easy to understand, and the fee you can be charged ranges from 2.49% - 4.49%.

Crypto.com vs Coinbase Deposit Methods

Crypto.com and Coinbase both accept an extensive range of deposit methods, supporting Bank transfer (ACH), PayPal, SEPA, Fedwire, Credit card, Debit card, SWIFT and Cryptocurrency.

Coinbase also accepts Apple Pay and SOFORT/iDEAL.

Winner - Coinbase

Both of these crypto platforms have a healthy number of payment options, but Coinbase accepts a few more that aren't available on Crypto.com.

Crypto.com vs Coinbase Features

Crypto.com and Coinbase are both feature-packed crypto exchanges with plenty to offer. I won't go in-depth into each feature found on these two platforms, but if you want to find out more, read my Crypto.com review and Coinbase review. I will cover some of the main features that make Crypto.com and Coinbase stand out from other crypto exchanges.

Crypto.com's own coin - CRO - is one of the biggest features of the exchange. The coin can be purchased directly from Crypto.com (as well as some other crypto exchanges), and when it is staked, gives many benefits to the user. If you stake CRO on the desktop exchange, you receive 10% APR interest paid daily, CRO rebate when you pay trading fees with CRO, and cashback when you use Crypto.com Pay. When you stake CRO on the mobile app, you receive up to 12% APR, a premium metal Visa card, where you receive up to 5% cashback on purchases (paid in CRO), rebates on subscriptions (Netflix, Spotify) and bookings (Expedia, Airbnb), and better APR in Crypto Credit and Crypto Earn. To read more about the CRO coin and its benefits, click here.

Crypto.com has a metal Visa debit card that you can request on the app once you start staking CRO coin. There are different levels of cards that can be accessed by staking higher amounts of CRO. At the highest tier of Visa card, users enjoy 5% cashback on all purchases (paid in CRO), 100% rebates on subscriptions (Netflix, Spotify) and 10% on bookings (Expedia, Airbnb), complimentary Airport Lounge access, and 2% extra interest on fixed-term deposits. The Visa card can be loaded with fiat currency and used just like a normal card, you don't need to spend your cryptocurrency.

Crypto.com offers staking of over 250+ different cryptocurrencies, not just CRO. Depending on the coin, users can receive up to 14.5% APY on their staked coins. Staking periods can be flexible, or locked for 1 or 3 months. The amount of CRO coin you have staked will affect how much interest you receive on your other staked coins, with higher rates when you have more CRO staked.

Coinbase has a unique feature where users can earn crypto just by watching a short video! You receive free crypto after viewing educational videos (about 3 min long) about cryptocurrency. For example, you can earn $3 in COMP crypto after watching one video, and $9 of COMP if you watch all 3 videos.

Coinbase has a mobile Wallet app available for iOS and Android devices. According to Google Play store, there are over 1 million downloads, with a 4.3-star rating from 24K reviews. You can use the Coinbase Wallet not only to securely store crypto but also gain access to a wide range of decentralised innovation. Users can participate in airdrops and ICOs, collect NFTs, browse decentralised apps (DApps), and send crypto to anyone around the world.

Winner - Crypto.com

Crypto.com stands out in terms of features, with the main focus being the CRO coin. When users stake the CRO coin, they gain access to many advantages, including the Visa debit card, which in turn provides additional benefits.

Crypto.com vs Coinbase Security

Crypto.com is a very secure platform, and they store 100% of user cryptocurrencies offline in cold storage, using Ledger Vault's institutional-grade custody. Fiat currencies are held in regulated custodian bank accounts, with US residents enjoying FDIC insurance. Crypto.com was awarded the coveted ISO/IEC 27701:2019 certification in 2020 after rigorous third-party auditing, making it the first cryptocurrency company in the world to receive this standard. This certification is an extension of Crypto.com's existing ISO/IEC 27001:2013 Information Security Management System (ISMS) certification. Crypto.com continues to maintain stringent policies, procedures, controls and commitment to continuously improve so it can maintain this coveted certification status. Crypto.com also has insurance cover for its crypto assets in the worst-case scenario where a breach occurs.

Coinbase uses multi-layered security such as 2FA (2-factor authentication), biometric logins (fingerprint & face ID), and data encryption, with USB drives and paper backups distributed geographically in safes and vaults around the world. All Coinbase employees are required to pass a criminal background check, and their hard drives are encrypted. Coinbase stores 98% of digital assets offline in cold storage, and even has crime insurance cover to protect digital assets in the event of a cybersecurity breach. Winner - Crypto.com

Crypto.com and Coinbase are both safe crypto exchanges, but Crypto.com has gone above and beyond. It has ISO/IEC 27701:2019 certification, cold storage of 100% of users' digital assets, and insurance cover.

Verdict - Crypto.com

It was an interesting task to compare two of the best cryptocurrency exchanges. Coinbase is so hugely popular that I thought it would be a very close match-up, but it seems that Crypto.com wins fairly convincingly.

Crypto.com has more coins, lower fees, industry-leading security, and plenty of features including their own CRO cryptocurrency which comes with so many additional benefits. If you plan on using crypto as a long-term investment, recommend Crypto.com. It has staking for over 40+ coins, including CRO, which gives you access to a Visa debit card with up to 5% cashback on all purchases, plus 100% rebate on subscription services like Netflix and Spotify.

Overall Winner - Crypto.com

Lower fees, more cryptocurrencies, Live Chat support, higher security and staking of over 40+ coins including CRO makes Crypto.com the favourite in this comparison.
