MetaMask is an excellent free decentralized, non-custodial wallet, allowing users to store and swap cryptocurrencies, interact with the Ethereum blockchain, and host a range of dApps. If you have been using MetaMask to store your crypto, but now you wish to withdraw money to your bank account, this guide will show you exactly how to do that.

How do I get my money out of MetaMask?

MetaMask is a crypto wallet that does not support selling of crypto, so you won't be able to withdraw fiat currency directly from it. The only way to withdraw money from MetaMask is to first send your cryptocurrency to a crypto exchange that allows sale of crypto, and fiat withdrawals.

We will go through this process step-by-step with screenshots, so you can follow along easily. This is an overview of the 7 simple steps, but keep reading to see each step explained in more detail.

Step 1: Choose a crypto exchange

Step 2: Create an account

Step 3: Verify your account

Step 4: Generate a crypto wallet address in Kraken

Step 5: Send crypto from MetaMask to Kraken

Step 6: Sell crypto for fiat currency

Step 7: Withdraw money to your bank account

Step 1 - Choose a crypto exchange

The first step is to select a cryptocurrency exchange that is easy to use, safe, supports the sale of crypto, and allows fiat withdrawals. There are many options available, but we have done the research and come up with our recommendation of the 3 best crypto exchanges for withdrawing money to your bank account.

In this guide, we will use screenshots from our Kraken account (read review) to withdraw money from our MetaMask account. The reason we choose Kraken is that it has low trading fees, is available around the world, including the US, and has 24/7 live chat customer support in case you need further assistance along the way. You can sign up to Kraken here.

If you are undecided or wish to research some more crypto exchanges, see our article on the best crypto exchanges. However, keep in mind that not all crypto trading platforms on that list will support fiat withdrawals.

Step 2 - Create an account

After you have chosen which crypto exchange to use, you will need to register an account. In this example, we are using Kraken, so you can also follow along easily if you sign up to Kraken here: https://www.kraken.com/

When you arrive at the Kraken website, click on 'Create Account' in the top right corner, and you will see a page like the screenshot below. Enter your email, choose a username and password, enter your country details, agree to the Terms of Service, then click 'Create Account'.

Step 3 - Verify your account

After signing up to Kraken, you should be taken through the verification process. You will need to verify your account up to the 'Intermediate' level before you can send crypto from MetaMask to Kraken, and then sell and withdraw your money. Kraken's verification process doesn't take long; you only need to verify your personal info and identity.

If you were not automatically directed to the verification, you can access it by clicking on your name in the top right corner, then click on 'Get Verified' as shown in the screenshot below. Click on 'Verify' to begin the process.

Step 4 - Generate a crypto wallet address in Kraken

After you have verified your Kraken account, you can create a wallet address for the crypto you want to send. Click 'Funding' in the menu (circled in red below), then click 'Deposit' (circled in yellow below). Then you will see a pop-up window where you can search for the cryptocurrency you want to send from MetaMask. We will send USDT in our example, but you can send any cryptocurrency that is supported by Kraken.

Select the cryptocurrency that you want to send from MetaMask to Kraken, then you see the deposit screen (similar to the screenshot below). If you are withdrawing USDT, you need to change the 'Deposit method' to Tether USD (ERC20), as shown by the red arrow below. This is because MetaMask only supports Ethereum tokens, so you cannot choose TRC20 or Polygon.

After this, click on 'Generate deposit address' underneath to create a crypto wallet address for your first withdrawal. After generating a deposit address, you will see a string of characters (covered by the blue rectangle in screenshot below) - this is your wallet address. Click the 'copy' icon (see blue arrow below) to copy this address.

Step 5 - Send crypto from MetaMask to Kraken

Now log into MetaMask and you will see your balance and assets list in your MetaMask account. Choose the cryptocurrency you want to send, then click the 'Send' icon.

Paste the wallet address you just copied from your Kraken account, into MetaMask. Choose the amount you wish to transfer, scroll down and click 'Next'. Follow any prompts to finalize the transfer of crypto to Kraken.

Step 6 - Sell crypto for fiat currency

You may have to wait for your USDT (or other crypto) to transfer to Kraken. This can take up to 30 minutes depending on network congestion, but is usually done within a few minutes. To check that your crypto has arrived in Kraken, click 'Funding' in the menu along the top of the site, and scroll down to the list of Crypto Assets.

In our example here, you can see that USDT has been successfully received in Kraken. Now it's time to sell it for fiat currency, so you can withdraw it to your bank account.

Click on the 'Buy Crypto' button along the top of the Kraken site. Your screen should look similar to the one below. Click on the 'Sell' button to begin the process.

Select the amount that you wish to sell. In our example here, we will choose to sell the Maximum amount, of 500 USDT. Click 'Review' to continue the sale.

You will see a confirmation screen where you can check the details of your transaction, including cryptocurrency price, fees, and the amount you will receive in fiat currency. When you are happy with the details, click on 'Confirm'.

You have now sold your cryptocurrency for fiat currency. The last step is to withdraw this money to your bank account.

Step 7 - Withdraw money to your bank account

Click 'Funding' in the top menu, then go to your account balances and find the fiat currency you want to withdraw. In our example, we are withdrawing US Dollars. Click on the 'Withdraw' icon (shown by the red arrow below).

You will now see a screen like the one below. Select your withdrawal method from the dropdown box, and then click 'Continue' to add your bank details. After you have done this, you will be able to withdraw your money to your bank account. Congratulations, you have managed to withdraw money from MetaMask to your bank account, with the help of Kraken.

If you ever find yourself lost along the way in our guide, you can reach out to Kraken's support team. They are available by live chat 24/7, which is excellent for all users, no matter where you live.
